Birth of my son 3

While Joshua was in Boston they had him on a respirator and were giving him nitric oxide treatments. Every day that passed they were able to wean him a little from both of those. The next Friday night they told us they felt Joshua could be moved back to Manchester so Monday morning they arranged the ambulance. The doctors were amazed at how fast he was progressing.    The doctor in Manchester told us that he had never seen a placenta so full of infection. He ran numerous tests trying to find some infection in Joshua but couldn't find anything, not even a trace. By Tuesday, September 27th, Joshua was off the ventilator. They still had an oxygen tube under his nose but that was all. We talked to the doctor at that point about transporting Joshua to Utah but none of us were comfortable with that yet. Around the first week in October the doctor told us he felt that Joshua should be medevaced to Utah immediately or he may be well enough to not need a medevac flight. He said that if he wasn't medevaced that it may be several months before he would be well enough to fly commercial or be able to handle the drive. I don't know if I explained that well enough. If we waited too long Joshua would be too healthy for a medevac flight but not healthy enough to travel any other way.    I immediately left to drive back to Utah. We needed a house and I needed to get back to work. Base housing had several nice houses available and we were able to move in fairly soon. Joshua was moved to a hospital in Ogden, UT and stayed there for a few weeks. He is now 22 months old and completely healthy.

Birth of my son 2

Heather and I received some phone calls from friends telling us they believe God was telling them Joshua was going to live. God also built up our faith and we also knew God was going to take care of Joshua. We decided to look for another doctor because the hospital Heather had been in did not have a NICU. We found a doctor in Manchester that we really liked. We asked him if he'd ever seen a case like this and what the outcome was. He said every example he had seen of this type of thing happening the baby was either deformed, had brain damage, was on oxygen all their life, or had some other serious problem. He said he had never heard of a baby being born with no major lifelong medical problems when the water broke so early. The doctors informed us that at 24 weeks the baby would have a slight chance to live so when we reached that time they admitted Heather back into the hospital. The doctor's said they really wanted try to hold off on delivering Joshua until at least 32 weeks weeks because they thought he should be strong enough by then. As time went on they took ultrasounds every week. The doctors could not find anything abnormal other than the lack of fluid. There was some fluid but not very much. It would leak out every once in a while and then a little would replenish. The doctor's told us that Joshua's lungs would probably not be well developed due to the lack of fluid and that we should expect him to be in the hospital until possibly December or January and that he may have to be on oxygen for years to come. As we got closer to 32 weeks Heather started praying for 3 things. 1: that they would not have to induce labor, that it would be a natural childbirth, 2: that labor wouldn't last too long, and 3: that Joshua would weight at least 5 pounds. The ultrasounds were amazing at this point because Joshua was growing so much that based on his size his due date kept moving closer. They finally scheduled to induce labor on September 24th. Heather had asked that they wait until after Daniel's birthday which was Sep. 16th. She was able to leave the hospital for a few hours to go to Daniel's party.    The morning of September 21st Heather started having contractions. They moved her to the delivery room and we waited for the doctor. While we were waiting a different doctor came in to see how things were going. He said it could be a little while because she wasn't dilated enough. Ten minutes later Heather got a strong urge to push. The nurse went and found a doctor and he examined her again and said the baby was coming now. The doctor barely had time to scrub and get dressed when out he came. There was a short time that he wasn't breathing. As soon as he was breathing they showed him to Heather real quick and then took him up to the NICU. He weighed exactly 5 pounds. They monitored his O2 and CO2 levels and determined his lungs weren't working properly. They put him on a respirator and worked with that for several hours but couldn't get the levels to stay where they should. They called Children's Hspital in Boston and set up a life flight. As soon as the nurse from Boston got there she administered a drug to help his lungs expand. He did a lot better from that point but they still had to send him to Boston. They said to expect him to be there anywhere from 3 weeks to a couple months. Heather's uncle and aunt live in Boston and they said we could stay with them. It was very nice being able to stay with family instead of at a hotel or having to commute. I went down the next day but Heather wasn't released until Saturday.

Birth of my son

On June 16th Heather's water broke. She was at 18 weeks. She was in New hampshire visiting her grandmother at the time. I was in Utah. She called me to let me know what was going on. I contacted Air Force Aid and they helped me get a flight that morning. I arrived at the hospital around 11 that evening. I talked with Heather for a few minutes when the doctor came in. She wanted to go over funeral arrangements. She asked us things like did we want to hold the dead body, did we want to have him cremated or buried, things like that. After she left the room I remembered a prophecy that had been given to Heather and me 4 years earlier. We were told that our son would be ok. Heather and I both felt that the word we were given applied to this situation. We called all our friends and family all over the world and asked for prayer. We then decided to name him Joshua Michael. We knew that wouldn't make it any easier should he die but we felt he needed to have a name. I really like both of those names because they are names of warriors. Joshua led the Israelites into Canaan and Michael is an angel. Joshua has been a fighter from the beginning. Three days later the doctor told Heather she could leave the hospital and wait for labor to begin from home. The doctor told us that she expected labor to start anytime and that Joshua would be still born. We asked if there was anything we could do to give Joshua more of a chance for life and the doctor said Heather should stay in bed with her legs elevated. The doctor didn't give us much hope of this having any real effect. In fact she suggested we go ahead and have an abortion.
